Start with their own card
Most collections start with a pack of strangers. A better first card is one of the collector themselves: a custom card of your kid from this season, in a display case, as the collection's centerpiece.
Make it a tradition — one new card of them every season — and the collection automatically documents their whole childhood in the sport. Ten years on, that run of cards is the part of the collection nobody can buy.
Add the pros they love
Retail packs of their favorite players give the collection its thrill. The pack opening is the event — the shuffle, the reveal, the hope of a special card — and it costs a few dollars.
Let their taste lead. A collection built around players they actually watch stays interesting; one built around what adults think will be valuable becomes a chore.
