What a glossy finish does
A glossy finish coats the card in a smooth, reflective layer. Colors come out saturated and punchy, the surface wipes clean, and the card gets that familiar retail-card sheen when it catches the light.
Gloss is the standard on professional trading cards for a reason: it protects the surface, handles well, and makes photos look their best at small size.
What a matte finish does
A matte finish is flat and non-reflective, with a soft, almost velvety look. It photographs without glare and can read as more understated or modern, which is why some art prints and stationery use it.
The tradeoffs on a trading card are real: matte surfaces show fingerprints and handling marks easily, colors render a bit flatter, and the card lacks the snap and sheen people associate with a real card.
Which one belongs on a trading card
For a card meant to feel like a card — handled, traded, displayed, and kept — gloss wins. It looks right, it holds up to handling, and it matches what the major card brands put on retail products.
